For more than 30 years, Michael’s photographs have appeared in fashion publications including Vogue, Elle, GQ and Vanity Fair for clients that have included Nautica, J. Crew and a host of fashion brands. He has been the man behind the camera, the creative director and the account executive for his own fashion-advertising agency.
In 1993, Michael began work on an idea for a book that he believed he could sell as a marketing tool for large companies. The idea came to fruition when he sold the concept to Champion Sportswear, for the 1994 Winter Olympics. The book, “Beyond the Sport, The Victory Within,” told inspirational stories of America’s Winter Olympians, including Peggy Fleming, Scott Hamilton and Eric Heiden. He wrote and published the book as well, selling 25,000 copies. Returning to Florida in 1997, for years Michael sensed God asking, “What are you doing with all of the creative gifts I have given to you? Using them only for your self, or sharing them with others?” So, in 2008, using his unique story-telling skills, his camera and creativity, he began production on a collection of fine art photographs that would explore the modern-day relevance of the centuries-old messages of Jesus.
The result is the magnificently beautiful and thought provoking, Journeys with the Messiah. Michael's photographs capture 1st Century Jesus intimately interacting with 21st Century Wall Street executives, high rollers, Nazis and people of questionable character. Produced in the ancient Italian city of Matera, this unique photographic journey delightfully incites a fresh perspective of Jesus. It is a journey for all people of all faiths. Journeys images have been interpreted into limited-edition fine art, a display book, moving-image DVD and more. Michael travels to churches and other venues to present the images in an exciting audio-visual presentation. An exhibit and more images are planned.
Until recently, there was no "hidden agenda" in my work. I was not looking deep into my soul, trying to understand or unlock my inner self or to understand some mystifying aspect of the world. My desire has always been to simply enjoy capturing "beauty" and then artfully enhancing it through the tools afforded me by a digital world. Thus, my subjects are unlimited - a child, a woman's face, an animal, a scenic or an abstract. It is all about what is pleasing to "my mind's eye." This part of my creative world remains.
Stepping beyond "just the beauty," I have recently pushed the limits of my creative gifts to tell stories through my images, specifically by depicting - through fine art photography - the messages shared by Jesus of Nazareth over two thousand years ago. Whereas my photographs of beauty have always been somewhat impulsive - spur of the moment - story telling images, as works of art, require time, thought, planning and the willingness to "let go," allowing the elements of the moment to take shape, often telling the story better than once imagined. Although accolades are always assuring, they are never the reason for work.
